VoxTune - User Manual

VoxTune is a software tool for editing monophonic vocal recordings. It offers you the possibility to precisely analyze your vocal recordings and correct the pitch of individual notes.

How VoxTune works:

The most important functions at a glance:

App's User Interface

The VoxTune user interface is clearly designed and allows you quick access to all important functions. It is divided into the following areas:

Importing a Vocal File

VoxTune allows you to import existing vocal files for analysis. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open menu: Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the upper right corner of the screen to open the VoxTune main menu.
  2. Select “Import Vocals”: Select “Import Vocals” from the menu.
  3. Select file: A file browser will open, giving you access to the files on your device. Navigate to the folder where the desired vocal file is located and select it.
  4. Import and analysis: VoxTune will now begin importing the selected file and analyzing it at the same time. During the import and analysis, a progress bar will be displayed in the upper part of the screen below the application bar, visualizing the current status of the process.
  5. Visualization in the note grid: Once the analysis is complete, the detected pitches of the imported vocal file are displayed in the note grid. You can now edit the recording.

Additional Information:

Recording

Instead of importing an existing vocal file into VoxTune, you can also record the vocals directly with the app. Here's how it works:

  1. Start recording: Tap the record button (red circle).
  2. Save or not: If you have previously recorded something but have not saved it, the app may ask you if you want to save (export) the old recording or delete it and replace it with the new recording. Choose the appropriate option.
  3. Let's go!: The recording starts. While you sing, VoxTune displays the detected pitches in real time on the note grid. This way you can see directly which notes you are hitting.
  4. End recording: To stop recording, tap one of the three buttons in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Analysis: After you have finished recording, VoxTune analyzes the recorded audio signal. The detected pitches are then displayed in detail in the note grid.

Playback

Start playback
To start playing a recording, tap the play button (triangle) in the button bar at the bottom of the screen. Tapping the play button again will stop playback.

Play Start Marker
Playback always begins at the position of the so-called Play Start Marker. This is represented by a vertical line in the note grid.

Touch Gestures

The note grid in VoxTune responds to various touch gestures, allowing you to operate it intuitively and edit it precisely.

Moving the note grid
You can move the note grid horizontally and vertically to display the desired area.

Scaling the note grid (two-finger gesture)
With a two-finger gesture (pinch-to-zoom) you can scale the note grid to get a more detailed or an overall overview.

Positioning the Play Start Marker
The Play Start Marker, which determines the starting point of playback, can be positioned by double-tapping.

Editing note boxes
VoxTune offers you various options for editing individual note boxes:

Controls and Buttons

The controls in VoxTune are clearly arranged and allow you to control the app intuitively. They are divided into two main areas: the upper area (application bar) and the lower area (button bar).

Upper area (application bar)
The application bar at the top of the screen contains the following controls:

Lower area (button bar)
The button bar at the bottom of the screen contains the controls for playback and recording:

Editing the Notes

VoxTune offers you various tools for editing the notes displayed in the note grid.

Pitch correction
To correct the pitch of a single note, proceed as follows:

  1. Touch and hold the note box: Touch and hold the note box whose pitch you want to edit.
  2. Endless loop of the audio signal: As long as you hold down the note box, the corresponding audio signal will be played in a continuous loop. This allows you to hear the effect of the pitch change directly.
  3. Adjust pitch: Move the pressed note box up or down to change the pitch accordingly. The pitch of the note changes in real time so you can hear the adjustment directly.
  4. Fine-tuning: To determine the position of the note box more precisely, you can move your finger sideways while still holding it down. The note box remains active and allows you to make finer adjustments to the pitch.
  5. Confirm position: Lift your finger once you have reached the desired pitch. The note box will be fixed in the new position.

To correct the pitch of a group of notes, proceed as follows:

  1. Select multiple note boxes: To select a range of note boxes, swipe your finger over the desired range in the upper third of the note grid.
  2. Start playback: Start playback with the Play button to play the highlighted note boxes in a loop.
  3. Enable editing: Touch and hold one of the highlighted note boxes.
  4. Now proceed according to points 3 - 5 in the previous paragraph.

Representation of sibilants (hissing sounds)
In addition to the voiced notes, VoxTune also displays sibilants in the note grid. These are symbolized by an open note box. It is usually not necessary to change the pitch of sibilants, as they are usually unproblematic in terms of sound.

Splitting and Merging Note Boxes

By splitting a note box into two separate boxes, you gain more precise control over pitch assignment. This feature also opens up the possibility of creating surprising musical effects.

In addition, it is possible to merge previously separated note boxes.

Splitting a Note Box
To split a note box into two separate boxes, follow these steps:

  1. Select the note box: Tap the desired note box to select it.
  2. Activate the split function: In the menu bar, you'll find an icon symbolizing splitting a note box. Tap it.
  3. The split has occurred: The selected note box is now splitted into two independent note boxes.
  4. Adjust width: A handle will appear between the newly created note boxes. Drag this handle left or right to specify the exact position of the split line. Please note that each of the resulting note boxes will retain a certain minimum size.

Notice: A small mark at the point where the splitting took place indicates splitted note boxes.

Merging Note Boxes
This feature allows you to merge previously splitted note boxes into a single note box. Splitted note boxes are marked with a visual marker at the split point for easy identification.

To merge two splitted note boxes, please follow these steps:

  1. Selection: Select the two desired note boxes by swiping over the corresponding area in the upper third of the note grid. The selected note boxes will be visually highlighted.
  2. Merging: Then tap the “Split/Merge” button. This action will merge the two selected note boxes back into one.
  3. Positioning: After successful merging, you can position the resulting note box at the desired pitch within the note grid.

Notice: Merging is only possible for note boxes that were previously splitted using the “Split” function.

Adjusting the Width of two splitted Note Boxes
This feature allows you to adjust the dividing line between two already split note boxes. This allows for precise control of the resulting note box sizes.

To change the position of the dividing line, please follow the steps below:

  1. Selection: Select the two adjacent note boxes whose dividing lines you want to edit by swiping over the corresponding area in the upper third of the note grid. The selected note boxes will be highlighted.
  2. Handle interaction: An interactive handle appears between the now selected note boxes.
  3. Positioning: Drag this handle left or right to set the new position of the dividing line. The width of the two resulting note boxes will adjust in real time.

Notice: Please note that when moving the dividing line, each of the two note boxes maintains a defined minimum size to ensure functionality. It is not possible to go below this minimum size.

Effects

Vibrato

Vibrato is a fascinating effect that can add a lively and dynamic character to your voice or instrument. It is a rapid, periodic change in the pitch of a sung or played note. In VoxTune you have full control over vibrato and you can adjust it individually for each note box or for a group of note boxes.

Add and Edit Vibrato

  1. Select one or more note boxes to which you want to apply the vibrato.
  2. In the effects menu “fx” select the option “Vibrato”.

Vibrato Parameters
After adding the vibrato, you can adjust the following parameters to achieve the desired effect:

Tips and Tricks

Vocoder

The vocoder (short for “voice encoder”) is a powerful sound synthesis tool that combines two audio signals in unique ways. The result is often synthetic, robotic, or even vocal sounds that add a special touch to your productions.

Its functionality is based on the transfer of spectral properties of one signal—usually a human voice, the so-called modulator signal—to another signal generated by a synthesizer, the so-called carrier signal. This allows the synthesizer to impart the characteristics of the spoken or sung word.

The VoxTune Vocoder: Creative effects for your productions
VoxTune offers you an intuitive vocoder that lets you effortlessly create fascinating effects. The integrated synthesizer provides the appropriate carrier signal, so you can start generating sounds immediately. Your recorded vocals serve as a modulator signal, controlling the pitch of the synthesizer, thus enabling a precise symbiosis of the signals.

Using the Vocoder in VoxTune:

  1. Selecting note boxes: Select the note box(es) to which you want to apply the vocoder effect. You can make individual settings for each note box or assign the same parameters to all note boxes.
  2. Starting the vocoder: Navigate to the Effects menu and select the Vocoder. The following parameters will then be available:

The vocoder parameters in detail:

Best Practice:
A recommended approach is to first select all note boxes and set a basic vocoder setting. Then, if necessary, you can adjust the vocoder settings for individual note boxes to create subtle variations or striking effects, allowing you to unleash your creativity.

Export Vocal File

Important NOTE: The export function is subject to a fee and can be purchased via an in-app purchase. After purchase, the export function is available to you without restrictions.

Further NOTE: The audio quality you receive upon export is significantly brighter than the audio quality while editing in the app. Background: To optimize performance during editing in the app, the audio bandwidth is reduced.

The audio signal edited in VoxTune is saved within the app. To use the audio signal in other apps or on your computer, you must export it.

Export process

  1. Open menu: Tap the menu icon (three-dot icon) in the upper right corner of the screen to open the main menu.
  2. Select “Export Vocals”: Select “Export Vocals” from the menu.
  3. Selecting the recording (for direct recording): If the vocal recording was made directly with the app, VoxTune will ask you if you want to export the original recording (the unedited version) or the edited recording. If you want to export both versions, you will need to go to the “Export Vocals” menu item twice and select the desired option each time.
  4. File browser and file name: A file browser will open where you can select the location for the exported file. VoxTune will automatically suggest a file name. This file name is based on the name of the imported file (if any) and will be supplemented with the current date and time.
  5. File extension: Please make sure that the file name ends with the file extension “.wav”. The auto-suggest already includes the correct file extension, but it is important to check this in case you change the file name manually.
  6. Complete export: After you have selected the storage location and the file name (with the correct extension “.wav”), confirm the export. The file will now be saved in the selected folder.
