VoxTune is a software tool for editing monophonic vocal recordings. It offers you the possibility to precisely analyze your vocal recordings and correct the pitch of individual notes.

How VoxTune works:

  • Recording or importing: First, record your vocals using your device's microphone or import an existing vocal file.
  • Analysis: After recording or importing, VoxTune analyzes the audio material and graphically displays the detected pitches in a note grid.
  • Correction: In the note grid you can now check and change the pitch of the individual notes.
  • Export: You can then export the result of your editing as an audio file and use it outside of VoxTune.

The most important functions at a glance:

  • Recording: Record your singing directly with the app.
  • Import: Import audio files in common formats for analysis.
  • Note grid: Visualizes the detected pitches and allows pitch correction.
  • Export: Export the edited recording as an audio file.

The VoxTune user interface is clearly designed and allows you quick access to all important functions. It is divided into the following areas:

  • Upper area (application bar): At the top of the app is the application bar. This contains various controls, the exact functionality of which is explained in detail later in this manual. The elements of the application bar include:
    • Selection of the key: Here you can select the key for analysis and editing.
    • Undo/Redo buttons (arrows): With these buttons you can undo or redo your last actions.
    • Menu icon (three-dot icon): Tapping this icon opens the main menu of VoxTune, which contains additional functions and settings.
    • Other elements which will also be described later.
  • Progress bar: For processes that take a long time, such as importing a file, a progress bar appears below the application bar, showing the current status of the process.
  • Middle area (note grid): The largest part of the interface is taken up by the note grid. This is where the pitches of your vocal recording detected by VoxTune are graphically displayed. The note grid is the central element for analyzing and editing your recordings.
  • Left area (keyboard): On the left edge of the screen there is a keyboard with the 88 keys of a piano. This serves as a visual and audible reference for the pitches shown in the note grid.
  • Lower area (button bar): At the bottom of the screen is the button bar. This contains the controls for playback and recording:
    • Rewind button: Use this button to rewind the playback.
    • Play button: Starts or pauses playback.
    • Record button: Starts recording your vocals.

VoxTune allows you to import existing vocal files for analysis. Here's how to do it:

  1. Open menu: Tap the menu icon (three dots) in the upper right corner of the screen to open the VoxTune main menu.
  2. Select “Import Vocals”: Select “Import Vocals” from the menu.
  3. Select file: A file browser will open, giving you access to the files on your device. Navigate to the folder where the desired vocal file is located and select it.
  4. Import and analysis: VoxTune will now begin importing the selected file and analyzing it at the same time. During the import and analysis, a progress bar will be displayed in the upper part of the screen below the application bar, visualizing the current status of the process.
  5. Visualization in the note grid: Once the analysis is complete, the detected pitches of the imported vocal file are displayed in the note grid. You can now edit the recording.

Additional Information:

  • Supported file formats: VoxTune supports the common audio formats WAV and MP3.
  • Duration of import and analysis: The duration of the import and analysis process depends on the size of the audio file and the capabilities of your device. For very large files, the process may take some time.

Instead of importing an existing vocal file into VoxTune, you can also record the vocals directly with the app. Here's how it works:

  1. Start recording: Tap the record button (red circle).
  2. Save or not: If you have previously recorded something but have not saved it, the app may ask you if you want to save (export) the old recording or delete it and replace it with the new recording. Choose the appropriate option.
  3. Let's go!: The recording starts. While you sing, VoxTune displays the detected pitches in real time on the note grid. This way you can see directly which notes you are hitting.
  4. End recording: To stop recording, tap one of the three buttons in the bar at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Analysis: After you have finished recording, VoxTune analyzes the recorded audio signal. The detected pitches are then displayed in detail in the note grid.

Start playback
To start playing a recording, tap the play button (triangle) in the button bar at the bottom of the screen. Tapping the play button again will stop playback.

Play Start Marker
Playback always begins at the position of the so-called Play Start Marker. This is represented by a vertical line in the note grid.

  • Default position: By default, the Play Start Marker is at position 0:00, i.e. at the beginning of the recording.
  • Positioning of the marker: You can place the Play Start Marker anywhere within the note grid to start playback from a specific position. To do this, double-tap the desired position in the note grid. The Play Start Marker will then jump to the selected position.

The note grid in VoxTune responds to various touch gestures, allowing you to operate it intuitively and edit it precisely.

Moving the note grid
You can move the note grid horizontally and vertically to display the desired area.

  • One-finger gesture: To move the note grid, touch and drag it with one finger. This gesture works in the lower two-thirds of the note grid.
  • Marking note boxes: In the upper third of the note grid, you can mark areas of note boxes by swiping your finger over the desired area.

Scaling the note grid (two-finger gesture)
With a two-finger gesture (pinch-to-zoom) you can scale the note grid to get a more detailed or an overall overview.

  • Pinch-to-Zoom: Place two fingers on the note grid (in the lower two-thirds of the note grid) and move them apart to enlarge the grid (zoom in) or together to shrink it (zoom out).

Positioning the Play Start Marker
The Play Start Marker, which determines the starting point of playback, can be positioned by double-tapping.

  • Double-tap: Double-tap the desired position in the music grid. The Play Start Marker will then jump to this position and playback will start from this point the next time you tap the play button.

Editing note boxes
VoxTune offers you various options for editing individual note boxes:

  • Activating and moving: Touch and hold a note box to activate it, then you can move the note box to correct the pitch.
  • Mark: Single tapping on a note box will highlight it. You can now adjust the waviness or mute the note box.

The controls in VoxTune are clearly arranged and allow you to control the app intuitively. They are divided into two main areas: the upper area (application bar) and the lower area (button bar).

Upper area (application bar)
The application bar at the top of the screen contains the following controls:

  • Selection of the key: At the top left of the application bar is the option for selecting the key. Tapping this control opens a selection of keys. When you select a key, the note boxes in the note grid are automatically aligned to the corresponding pitches of the selected key (“snap”). For maximum flexibility when editing, you can select the “chromatic” or “free” options.
    • chromatic: In this mode you can edit all chromatic semitones.
    • free: In this mode you are completely free to edit the pitch, without being restricted by a key.
    • Key: When moved, the note boxes snap to the pitches of the selected key.
  • Select all note boxes: This control allows you to select all note boxes in the note grid at once. Other selections are:
    • Select range: To select a range of note boxes, slide your finger over the desired area in the upper third of the note grid.
    • Select single note box: To select a single note box, tap it directly.
  • Undo: With the Undo button you can undo the last performed action.
  • Redo: With the Redo button you can redo an undone action.
  • Open menu: The menu icon (three-dot icon) opens the main menu of VoxTune, which contains additional functions and settings.
  • Mute/unmute selected note boxes: This control allows you to mute or unmute the selected note boxes.
  • Adjust the waviness of the selected note boxes: This control allows you to adjust the “waviness” of the pitches of the selected note boxes.
  • Effects for the selected note boxes: Currently, the vibrato effect is implemented, the functionality of which is explained in detail later in this manual.

Lower area (button bar)
The button bar at the bottom of the screen contains the controls for playback and recording:

  • Set the Play Start Marker to the beginning (rewind button): This control resets the Play Start Marker to the beginning of the recording (position 0:00).
  • Start/stop playback (play button): Use the play button to start playback of the recording. Tapping the play button again will stop playback.
  • Start/stop recording (record button): Use the record button to start recording. You can stop recording by tapping the stop button (square), which appears instead of the record button during recording.

VoxTune offers you various tools for editing the notes displayed in the note grid.

Pitch correction
To correct the pitch of a single note, proceed as follows:

  1. Touch and hold the note box: Touch and hold the note box whose pitch you want to edit.
  2. Endless loop of the audio signal: As long as you hold down the note box, the corresponding audio signal will be played in a continuous loop. This allows you to hear the effect of the pitch change directly.
  3. Adjust pitch: Move the pressed note box up or down to change the pitch accordingly. The pitch of the note changes in real time so you can hear the adjustment directly.
  4. Fine-tuning: To determine the position of the note box more precisely, you can move your finger sideways while still holding it down. The note box remains active and allows you to make finer adjustments to the pitch.
  5. Confirm position: Lift your finger once you have reached the desired pitch. The note box will be fixed in the new position.

Representation of sibilants (hissing sounds)
In addition to the voiced notes, VoxTune also displays sibilants in the note grid. These are symbolized by an open note box. It is usually not necessary to change the pitch of sibilants, as they are usually unproblematic in terms of sound.

Vibrato

Vibrato is a fascinating effect that can add a lively and dynamic character to your voice or instrument. It is a rapid, periodic change in the pitch of a sung or played note. In VoxTune you have full control over vibrato and you can adjust it individually for each note box or for a selection of note boxes.

Add and Edit Vibrato

  1. Select one or more note boxes to which you want to apply the vibrato.
  2. In the effects menu “fx” select the option “Vibrato”.

Vibrato Parameters
After adding the vibrato, you can adjust the following parameters to achieve the desired effect:

  • Width: This value indicates what percentage of the note length is affected by the vibrato. For example, at 50% the vibrato only affects the back half of the note, while at 100% the entire note is affected by the vibrato.
  • Height: Here you can specify how much the pitch fluctuates during the vibrato. The height is given in semitones. A higher value leads to a more pronounced vibrato.
  • Frequency: This value determines how quickly the pitch changes. The frequency is given in Hertz (Hz), i.e. vibrations per second. A higher value results in a faster vibrato.

Tips and Tricks

  • Experiment with the parameters to find the perfect vibrato effect for your voice or instrument.
  • Use vibrato specifically to emphasize certain notes or phrases.
  • Make sure that the vibrato does not sound too strong or unnatural. A subtle vibrato can emphasize the naturalness of the sound.

Important NOTE: The export function is subject to a fee and can be purchased via an in-app purchase. After purchase, the export function is available to you without restrictions.

The audio signal edited in VoxTune is saved within the app. To use the audio signal in other apps or on your computer, you must export it.

Export process

  1. Open menu: Tap the menu icon (three-dot icon) in the upper right corner of the screen to open the main menu.
  2. Select “Export Vocals”: Select “Export Vocals” from the menu.
  3. Selecting the recording (for direct recording): If the vocal recording was made directly with the app, VoxTune will ask you if you want to export the original recording (the unedited version) or the edited recording. If you want to export both versions, you will need to go to the “Export Vocals” menu item twice and select the desired option each time.
  4. File browser and file name: A file browser will open where you can select the location for the exported file. VoxTune will automatically suggest a file name. This file name is based on the name of the imported file (if any) and will be supplemented with the current date and time.
  5. File extension: Please make sure that the file name ends with the file extension “.wav”. The auto-suggest already includes the correct file extension, but it is important to check this in case you change the file name manually.
  6. Complete export: After you have selected the storage location and the file name (with the correct extension “.wav”), confirm the export. The file will now be saved in the selected folder.

Additional Information:

  • Storage location: The exact location for exported files depends on your Android device and settings. Typically, the files are saved in the device's internal storage in the “VoxTune” folder or a similar folder.
  • Problems with export: If you encounter problems exporting, make sure that your device has enough storage space.

VoxTune's settings menu allows you to customize various aspects of the app to suit your individual needs and preferences.

Open settings
To open the settings menu, proceed as follows:

  1. Tap the menu icon (three-dot icon) located in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. In the menu that opens, select “Settings”.

The individual setting options are described in detail below:

Concert pitch
In this setting you can set the pitch of the concert pitch A.

  • Standard pitch: The internationally standardized concert pitch A is 440 Hz.
  • Adjustment: However, in some cases, for example in an orchestra, the concert pitch may deviate from this standard value.
  • Recommendation: Only change this setting if you know the exact reference pitch of your accompanying music. An incorrect setting of the concert pitch can lead to incorrect analysis of the pitches in VoxTune.

Design
Here you can customize the visual appearance of the app.

  • Light: Select this option for a bright and friendly appearance of the app.
  • Dark: Choose this option for a dark design that can be easier on the eyes, especially in low light conditions.
  • System default: Enable this option to automatically adapt the theme of VoxTune to the system setting of your Android device. So if your device is running in dark mode, VoxTune will automatically switch to dark mode too.

Quality of pitch analysis
VoxTune offers two different methods for analyzing pitch, which differ in their quality and analysis speed.

  • Standard method (high quality): This method provides a very high level of accuracy in detecting pitches. However, it takes a little longer to analyze. This option is ideal when maximum precision in the analysis is a priority.
  • Fast method (lower quality): This method analyzes the audio signal much faster, but achieves a slightly lower accuracy in pitch detection. This option is recommended when fast analysis is more important than absolute precision, for example when quickly reviewing recordings.
  • Recommendation: Choose the method that best suits your current needs. For detailed analysis and professional applications, the standard method is recommended. For quick checks or less demanding applications, the faster method may be sufficient.

The audio signal edited in VoxTune is saved within the app. In order to use the audio signal in other apps or on your computer, the file must be exported.

Paid export function
While all other features of VoxTune can be used for free, the audio file export function is a paid feature that can be purchased via an in-app purchase.

In-app purchase process
